Datuk Hj. Abu Bakar Bin Hj. Abas, a Malaysian aged 51, was appointed as Group Managing Director of Suria Capital (SURIA) in February 2004. Prior to this appointment, he held the post of Executive Director of SURIA since 24 August 1996. He graduated with a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He had obtained a postgraduate Diploma in Economic Development from the University College of Swansea, United Kingdom.

He began his career in 1980 with the Sabah State Civil Service serving various ministries and department which included the State’s Economic Planning Unit, the State’s Ministry of  Communication and Works and the State Ministry of Finance in different capacities. In 1983, he became the Secretary General of the Sabah Bumiputra Chamber of Commerce (SBCC) until 1988. A year later, he was attached to the Financial Review Section of the State Ministry of Finance until 1994. The following year, he was appointed as Senior Confidential Secretary to the Chief Minister of Sabah under the Chief Minister’s Department.  While in the State Civil Service and SBCC, he had chaired and sat on the Board of several public companies as well as subsidiaries of SBCC.

Currently, he is the Chairman of SURIA's subsidiary companies, namely S.P. Satria Sdn Bhd, SCHB Engineering Services Sdn Bhd and Tricubes Suria Sdn Bhd. He also sits on the Board of Suria Bumiria Sdn Bhd and Hikmat Bumimaju Sdn Bhd. as well as Sedcovest Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Sabah Economic Development Corporation (SEDCO). He was conferred the State’s Datukship by Tuan Yang Terutama Yang DiPertua Negeri Sabah on 16th September 2005.
